at last, it has found its friend

2024

public sculpture commissioned by Jing’an International Sculpture Project (JISP) 2024

This newly commissioned site-specific sculpture draws inspiration from a scene in Disney’s animated film The Ugly Duckling, in which the duckling encounters a wooden decoy during its journey to find its family and friends. This sculpture reinterprets the scene, depicting the frame-by-frame dismantling of the decoy in front of the duckling. This physical disintegration symbolizes the setbacks the duckling experiences in its search for self-identity, while also highlighting its resilience in attempting to connect with the outside world despite difficulties.

Echoing the theme of the exhibition, this work emphasizes the importance of communication and connection. It reflects on our desire for a sense of belonging and the need to cultivate meaningful connections with the world. The piece explores the friction we may encounter in understanding the world and seeking self-identity, as well as the courage and perseverance required to overcome these challenges.
